This index page provides a short description of each section of our site. There are over 100 different pages as well as many photographs, maps, etc. So it is a good idea to look through this page first to see if you can find what you want.

As you browse through our site you will find at the top of each page links back to this page (Contents) and up to the page above the page you are looking at. In addition most pages have buttons linking to other pages in the same section and to sections related to the page you are reading.

Factual Pages: The factual pages include a wide range of biological and environmental information about penguins -  divided into several subsections

The Penguins    Small photos and a brief description of each of the seventeen species of penguin.

Species Notes   Detailed notes on each species of penguin, including: distinguishing features of the species, data on the size and weight, notes on the breeding cycle as well as a map showing where each species can be found.

Breeding Behaviour   Data on the breeding behaviour of penguins. There is a separate page for each genus of penguin.

Threats   Data on endangered species of penguins and on the threats to the various populations of penguins in the wild.

Treasure Oil Spill  Information about the biggest wildlife rescue operation ever undertaken following the sinking of the 'Treasure' in Table Bay (just off of Cape Town) in June 2000. 40% of the world population of African Penguins were affected.

Life Cycle of Penguins  A set of pages describing the life cycle of penguins from the egg to the adult.

Evolution of the penguins    Information on the types of fossil penguins and about the way in which modern penguins evolved from their flying ancestors.

Bibliography   Good books about penguins and their environment. Also included are books on the exploration of Antarctica. We have included brief notes on all those books we own. Many of these books have been used by us to help in the preparation of these pages.
